Introduction
Remember when teacher told us, "Reading is fundamental"? Artist and photo illustrator, Thomas Allen, went a step further; jumping right off the page. I discovered his work sifting through my collection of Art Forum. Gravitating toward the sexy popup styled dioramas on the page; I took to the internet to dig up what I could about our friend Thomas Allen.
Who Is Thomas Allen
Thomas Allen has been moving the art world for over a decade and somehow I've never heard of him. He earned his BFA from Wayne State University (Detroit) and an MFA from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis). Represented by Foley Gallery in New York, you can find his permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Arts—Houston, The Milwaukee Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Target Corporation, Fidelity Investments, Microsoft, the Progressive Corporation and Twitter.
His resume also bolsters editorial illustrations for over 50 different publications world-wide including The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, OUT, Le Monde, National Geographic and The Wall Street Journal. In 2007, he won a SPOTS Gold Award from The Society of Publication Designers and was nominated for an American Illustration Award in 2014—both for his work in Harper's Bazaar.
