Directed by Hippolyte Cupillard, La Séance is an exquisitely animated short film, depicting an enigmatic camera-headed character, preparing to view a short movie. The short takes place in a cavernous theatre, littered with strange props, and other unknown oddities. Surrounding the main character, are small stick-like figures, which appear to be constructed from matches, buttons, and other common household items. The viewer soon realizes, the audience of small figures, or creations, are animated by some power possessed by the main character. Toward the end of the film, the viewer is delighted, by the main event: a dancing circus of potato shaped figures, all performing their own unique form of interpretive dance.
La Séance, is a remarkable work of cinematic art. Its attention to detail is admirably reminiscent of animation styles such as Akira, Paprika, and Ponyo to name a few. Between the study of movement, space, and time; I though it was fascinating that none of the characters shown have actual eyes. Even the main character, who's entire head is a projector; lacks the fundamental gift of full sight. Symbolic of how lonely it must feel, to be a movie projector, with no one to show movies too. The soundtrack, created by Amateur Music Life, establishes the overall tone from beginning to end; accurately demonstrating the vast and provocative nature experience through out the film. This is definitely my jam.
