Ten Ways to Overcome Stress

Ten Ways to Overcome Stress

Introduction

Homer's Brain

(Difficulty concentrating is among one of the many signs of stress and depression)
Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations like the COVID pandemic. This can be a challenging time for both adults and children. Not all stress is bad though. When we experience stress, the Amygdala (the fear center of the brain), activates a hormonal response in our central stress system, through the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal Axis. These hormones are released throughout the body, giving us a rush of adrenaline often called: fight or flight. This response to stress is an important natural tool, needed for making split decisions under special circumstances.

However, prolonged stress can have negative effects on the brain; which can lead to feeling anxious, sad, angry, and/or overwhelmed. Some common signs of stress are changes in sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, increased use of tobacco or alcohol, and irregular eating patterns.
If you find yourself stressed out from the rigors of life and wouldn't mind a few ideas on how to lower the tension, here are 10 ways you can take control over the stress and create more feel-good chemicals for well-being.

Ten Ways to Overcome Stress

10. Kiss Your Mate

Kissing triggers the brain to release a cocktail of chemicals throughout the body, including oxytocindopamine, and serotonin, which can make you feel euphoric and promote feelings of affection and bonding. It also lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels, strengthens face muscles, and can help decrease blood pressure.

9. Get Smiling and Laugh

The act of smiling releases neuropeptides, endorphins, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters elevate your mood and help the immune system to function more effectively. It also feels good when you see people smiling and laughing.  Not only do these natural chemicals elevate your mood, but they also relax your body and reduce physical pain.

8. Connect with others

Human beings are social creatures; we crave feelings of support, value, and acceptance. In fact, Mental Health America found that 71 percent of people surveyed turned to friends or family in times of stress. It can become very easy to become isolated with one's own thoughts, and connecting with others can provide objective feedback and support.

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

(Goku isn't known for having the best diet, but even he understands the benefits of a healthy meal)

An unhealthy diet can place the body under a great amount of stress, from diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, up to 80% of cases of premature heart disease and stroke can be prevented by making lifestyle changes, such as increasing levels of physical activity and eating healthily. In 2016, researchers also found people who consumed foods containing a high load of refined carbohydrates, such as those found in soft drinks, cakes, white bread, and biscuits; increased symptoms of depression and fatigue. However, vegetables, whole fruits, and whole grains had a much lower load of refined carbs.

6. Get Enough Sleep

A variety of factors including stress can disrupt sleep patterns. Sleep plays a big part in both learning and memory. Without enough sleep, it's tough to focus, take in new information, and process our latent emotions. Another study by PubMed, reveals that people who are exposed to soothing music for 45 minutes at bedtime have more restful and deeper sleep compared to those who didn’t listen to music. For peak, health benefits, shoot for about 7-8 hours of sleep time each night.

5. Exercise

Moving your body does your body good.  Exercise can increase the duration and quality of sleep by boosting the production of serotonin in the brain and decreasing levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Walking or cycling can help in the production of these feel-good chemicals. Many of us find it hard to stick to just one workout routine, so try exercising with friends, and have a little fun with it.

4. Try Some Tunes

Listening to music that you love has been shown to lower cortisol levels in the brain, and stimulate some other necessary functions.  Stanford study revealed that music engages areas of the brain which are involved in paying attention, making predictions, and updating events in our memory. Playing a musical instrument can also have added value; providing an opportunity for people to express and control their feelings and helped build a sense of connectedness. So next time your favorite song comes on, let it rock a few times over for an added serotonin boost.

3. Create a Relaxation Ritual

A massage, soak in the tub, or other forms of pampering, are solid ways to relax and revitalize the body. When in a relaxed state, another chemical cocktail is released in the brain, helping to reduce the stress hormones. This can lead to a healthy life and well being, signaling to others that you care about yourself.

2. Get Closer to Nature

A few minutes a day surrounded by plants, animals, rivers, and other elements considered as nature; has been proven to reduced stress and increased self-esteem.

1. Meditate

Meditation is a habitual process of training your mind to focus and redirect your thoughts. It can enhance melatonin levels and assist the brain in achieving a specific state where sleep is easily achieved. Meditation can also reduce symptoms in people with stress-triggered medical conditions, such as anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and fibromyalgia. Meditation can also diminish the perception of pain in the brain. If you're interested in meditation, try it out and consider guided exercises to get started with one that is right for you.
