Modern Taste with a Touch of Nostalgia

Introduction

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, you ask? She's comes to us from the latest series of throwbacks Basic Fun! Their mission to bring back classic gaming titles, with a retro-modern twist, for seasoned as well as younger generations to enjoy. The handheld's vintage aesthetic echoes trace elements of sharing lineage with the Commodore Amiga 500. The games keyboard features a four-way directional pad, menu, sound, back, and enter buttons. The on and off button disguised as an inserted floppy disk, cleverly calling us back to days when life seemed so simple.

History

Broderbund's third best-seller for the Commodore 64, in 1987 - source FANDOM

In 1980, brothers Doug and Gary Carlston founded a computer company named, Broderbund. They led Broderbund to releases popular titles, including Prince of Persia, Choplifter, Myst, and Galactic Empire. By 1984, InfoWorld estimated their company as the tenth-largest microcomputer-software company and largest entertainment-software company, with $13 million in 1983 sales. In 1985, Doug and Gary hesitantly released, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Nervous about how the public would receive their new geography-based strategy game, the brothers opted to bundle its release with a copy of the Official World Almanac. The original version of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? was ported over many video game consoles of that era. Among them were the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Commodore 64, DOS, Macintosh, NES, SEGA Master System, SEGA Genesis, Super Nintendo, and TurboGrafix-CD. Despite the doubts, Carmen Sandiego was a smash hit. It would not be long until Broderbund would discover, they had created an iconic character.

Conclusion

A scene from the hit PBS Kids Gameshow. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Episode 289 - Haul of the Roamin' Empire, Episode aired 14 December 1995 - image source FANDOM

I'm happy to see a classic version of Carmen Sandiego in handheld size. As far as I can remember, we had The Oregon Trail at my elementary school, which I hated. All of my Carmen Sandiego binging happened at home, where I would either watch the PBS gameshow, play Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego - Junior Detective, or tune into the FoxKids 1997 cartoon. It is safe to say that I will be definitely purchasing one of my own. So look out for the review sometime in the summer. If you want one too, I'll leave a link below.
