Introduction
As we delve into another edition of discovered artists, I'm excited to shine a spotlight on the talented UK paper artist, Penny, represented by the esteemed Harman Projects. Our encounter with his work at last years' 2022 Art on Paper Fair was a truly delightful experience. Penny's work explores the concept of modern culture and identity through the use of various paper currencies that he cuts, paints and stencils. With Penny's captivating vision and unique style, we are eager to share what we've gathered about his work. So, let us take a moment to bask in the luxury of Penny's offerings and discover the inspiration he has to offer.
Artist and Technique
Penny is a talented paper artist from the UK whose background as a surgeon has greatly influenced his art. After realizing that being a surgeon was not his calling, Penny adopted his precision slicing skills to the art world, creating intricate stenciled motifs that reflect his fascination with the role of money in shaping culture and identity. Penny's currency pieces are crafted using a variety of techniques, including multi-layering hand cut stenciling, spray painting, rubber stamping, multi-pass UV curved printing, and high spot varnish detailing. The bold colors and intricate designs of Penny's work are truly stunning, and his unique perspective on the intersection of money and culture makes him a truly captivating artist.
Art On Paper Solo Show
Harmon Projects definitely stood out from the rest of the booths at the fair. Unlike the other galleries who chose to showcase a few selected pieces from a few of their artists, Harman projects decided to go all out by dedicating the entire space as an exhibition ground to feature the full scope of Penny's Money Collection. The display entering the booth was simply breathtaking as Campbell's soup cans were smashed and spilled all over the ground, creating an eye-catching and elaborate spectacle. It was impossible not to take notice of the pieces, including a bank bonds that featured Back to the Future, Fight Club, and other cult movie references.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the 2022 Art on Paper fair was an incredible showcase of talent and creativity, and Penny's work truly stood out. The exhibition was a great reminder of how much inspiration can be found in such events. Penny's mischievous and cheeky works were my personal favorites, as they conveyed a sense of rebellion and hope for a better future. As paper money may become obsolete in the near future, Penny's work will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on history. Overall, The Art on Paper Fair and other similar events are wonderful sources for discovering new and exciting artists, and I can't wait to attend more in the future.
